Welcome to the story of Monarch Golden Retrievers!

My name is Aislinn May (you can call me Ash!) and I'm the owner and breeder of Monarch Golden Retrievers!

I got my start in the dog world in 2013 as a high school CO-OP student, where I worked with Maplelane Golden Retrievers. I was hired as a full-time employee soon after I graduated from high school. Over the 8 years working at Maplelane, I learned a lot; from dog training to breeding, I fell in love with the dog world and the golden retriever breed. I raised countless litters under Sherri Hall's guidance, with many of those puppies entering into service dog training, therapy work and sport homes. Once Maplelane made the move up north in 2021, I decided to branch out with my own kennel, Monarch, with the hope of doing justice to the breed and producing better and better dogs. I thank the whole Maplelane crew for giving me my start and for their continued support!

I got my first golden, Cali, in the beginning of 2018, and she sealed the deal on my love and devotion to the breed! Cali and I spent years exploring all the dog world has to offer before starting up Monarch Golden Retrievers. Over the years I've expanded my pack and have been training and competing in many sports including conformation, agility, dock diving, lure coursing, rally-o, obedience, scent detection and more with lots of plans to keep growing and improving in the future!

In fall of 2021, I decided to also go back to school for the Animal Care Program at Sheridan College. I completed the one-year program, receiving my ACA certificate.  Then in fall of 2023, I decided again to go back to school for the veterinary technician program at Seneca. I'm currently finishing my first year and I'm loving it!

Why the name Monarch?

We officially became Monarch Golden Retrievers in the summer of 2021. I have some people ask why “Monarch”, so here is a little background on our kennel name.

My mom was the one that encouraged my love of all animals since the day I was born. She always had a dream of doing what I'm doing-- having a career working with dogs and doing something she loved. I lost my mom to a long battle with cancer in 2011 when I was 13 years old. At her funeral, a monarch butterfly floated down and landed on her casket just before she was buried. Whenever I see a monarch butterfly now, I like to think it's Mom just checking in and watching over me. I hope she's proud of where I'm at in my life and what my future goals are.

So, we are officially named “Monarch Golden Retrievers” in honor of my mother, who I miss everyday and I owe everything too.
